Founded in by John H. Johnson in 1942 as the Negro Digest (named after Readers Digest), this was the first major publication aimed at an African-American audience. It ceased published in 1951, returned in 1961, was renamed Black World in 1970, and continued on until 1976.

Negro Digest/Black World played a huge part in the The Black Arts Movement, and is an incredibly valuable look into perspectives from that era. Johnson also went on to found Jet and Ebony magazines.
